Internships

SDOF strives to give young adults the tools and inspiration needed to become ocean stewards and realize that they CAN make a difference. Interns gain valuable experience and insight into the non-profit world. They participate in hands-on projects, implement their own programs and work with other SDOF volunteers.

While SDOF staff is involved and provides direction and supervision, interns are allowed creative freedom in many of the projects and activities they are assigned. We believe this gives interns a “real world” work experience, teaches them responsibility and gives them ownership of their work. The more enthusiastic and creative an intern is, the more rewarding and exciting an SDOF internship will be.

Internship Descriptions

Collaborative Fisheries Projects Intern

Assist with the development, maintenance, volunteer coordination, and outreach for the following projects:

The ideal candidate is reliable, self-starting, hands-on, has a strong biology or marine science background, and possesses a demonstrated ability to work under little supervision.

* Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Education Programs Intern

Assist with the development, maintenance, volunteer coordination, and outreach for the following projects:

The ideal candidate is dependable, resourceful, adventurous, has a strong biology, marine science, or environmental science background, and possesses a demonstrated ability to work under little supervision.

* Must be comfortable hiking local canyons

Special Events Intern

Assist with the development, coordination, and execution of the following events:

The ideal candidate is organized, thoughtful, composed, and possesses a demonstrated ability to solve problems and handle multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Membership & Fundraising Intern

  • Identify potential corporations, businesses, and individuals to approach for sponsorships and/or in-kind donations based on shared missions.
  • Create and edit a broad range of materials about SDOF for current and prospective donors.
  • Maintain and update membership database.
  • Contact past members for membership renewal or upgrade.
  • Prepare and maintain content for the website for donors, potential donors, and their interests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate is outgoing, enthusiastic, positive, loves to interact and network with people and organizations, and is able to build constructive and effective relationships.

Marketing & Development Intern

Assist with SDOF’s marketing, outreach, and public relations efforts.

  • Create and distribute outreach materials.
  • Assist in writing and editing of SDOF monthly newsletter.
  • Maintain SDOF social media sites.
  • Increase awareness of SDOF services and service opportunities.
  • Speak on behalf of SDOF at various service clubs, agencies, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate is creative, personable, energetic, and able to communicate clearly and effectively with donors, sponsors, and the general public.

Intern Qualifications

  • Belief in the value and mission of the San Diego Oceans Foundation
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent data entry and internet research skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign a plus
  • Must be highly organized, responsible, self-motivated and reliable
  • Ability to work under little supervision
  • Must be a college junior/senior or college graduate
  • Creativity and imagination are a plus!

A minimum commitment of 16 hours per week is required, but more is always welcome!

All SDOF internships are a 3 month commitment, but may be extended based on SDOF need and intern performance.

Work Environment

  • Standard office environment, plus work in Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, and outdoors
  • Significant telephone and computer work (repetitive movement – typing)
